Real Italian gelato is an art.
Mantovani1946 stands out with it’s luxurious yet sleek design, giving Tottenham Court Road some much needed Italian charm.
With it’s large windows, high ceilings, delicious display Sicilian pastries, gelato, and beautiful home-made gelato/mousse cakes; it would be a crime to not wander inside. Let me give you the inside scoop!Originally from Naples, Mantovani1946 is a family business started by two brothers who left their respective jobs as a journalist and an engineer to embark on their dream to make the best ice cream cones Italy has ever seen. Now, the family have ventured into true Italian luxury gelato production.
Last year, Mantovani1946 was the winner of the 2015 Gelato Festival in Italy. A testament to the love and care they bestow into their gelato making.
I was invited to sample the Italian delicacies, and plumped myself like a true fat cat by the window.
The gloriously large windows are absolutely perfect for people watching, and relaxing with friends whilst you enjoy their creamy, and smooth Italian coffee.
We were presented with 3-tiers of Sicilian pastries and cakes. The biscuits and pastries are imported straight from Sicily, but the cakes they make in-store.
My particular favourite was the Cannoli, with goats milk cream cheese, pistachio and orange zest. After being thoroughly indulged with the delicate Sicilian pastries and biscuits, Pier beckoned us to their secret underground lab, where they make their special gelato.
With one fist in the air, I cried “TO THE LABORATORY!”
I wasn’t allowed to take any photos in their secret lab, as it contained their own-designed super gelato machine invention. I was sworn to secrecy as Pier educated us that everything used to make their famous gelato was imported from Sicily from small suppliers using only the finest ingredients.
Their most famous and award winning flavour was their Two Kingdom of Sicilies flavour, made with pistachios from Bronte, chocolate from Modica, hazelnuts from Giffoni and oranges from Sorrento. Which I can only describe as a nutty pistachio with subtle citrus hints.
We were taken back over the counter where we tried spoonfuls of their most famous flavours. They all were so soft, creamy and every flavour was distinct and flavoursome. They even have vegan-friendly options available. (Which I also tried and can vouch and say, are just as tasty as their non-vegan brothers and sisters.)
Just before we couldn’t breathe, we were presented with these masterpieces.
THE gelato mousse cakes.
Sorry…. I lost myself there just marvelling at her.
The delicate pockets of air of the mousse, the shine of the chocolate, the perfect composition of pistachio nuts and orange zest. This is a thing of beauty.
We plumped for 2 flavours 1) The Kingdom of 2 Sicilies & Strawberry & Chocolate Gelato cake.
We were not disappointed, and were mighty impressed with their natural modelling talent as much as the way they tasted.
The girls posed for the camera like a dream.
WORKING IT OUT.
…..Though they are rather on the rich and sweet side, so it would be in your best interest to share them.
Eating one alone would be a struggle.
But they sure are a sight for sore eyes….
There was even a chocolate gooey melted centre. Dark, bitter sweet chocolate encased in pistachio decadence. Utter dreamboat.
