I have a confession.
I’m a workaholic.
Sometimes I forget to eat, sometimes I forget to even drink water, and sometimes I neglect my family and loved ones because I just can’t find an off switch. (I know right, SHOCKING – especially the eating part -.-)
If I’m not at work, I’m working on my own personal projects or trying to learn a new skill.
It’s draining. Why am I like this? (Probably my Asian upbringing, or my Tiger mum with her constant whip cracking haha – LOVE YOU MUM <3 )
Some times you just need to take a step back.
I needed an escape, and like a fairy Godmother descending from a magical portal, Hurley House came a knocking and invited me to spend the weekend with them in Berkshire.
After travelling a mere 20minutes from Paddington, we arrived in Maidenhead, and grabbed a 5min taxi to Hurley House. Already you can hear the crickets chirping, the air feels cleaner and lighter even time started to move a little slower…
Arriving a little later than 8pm, we were famished. We were shown our rooms and immediately waltzed over to the dining room, where I eagerly perused the menu & extensive wine list.
The kitchen is headed up by the talented Michelin-starred Chef, Michael Chapman, formerly of the Royal Oak at Paley Street Nr. Maidenhead. The menu boasts countryside-sourced ingredients from Berkshire’s best producers and farmers, while fish and seafood are brought in directly from Brixham boats daily. Needless to say, we knew were in good hands.
I plumped for the Windsor Castle Red Deer with potato terrine, heritage beetroot, Roscoff onion, & burnt cauliflower, paired with Massaya Cap Est Beqaa Valley 2013.
Isn’t she a beauty?
Corr blimey, look at her lying on that plate like that! Shield your eyes, this is a show just for me…. 😉
The deer was cooked to utter perfection, medium so it was juicy, sweet and ever so slightly gamey.
Delicious, especially paired with the wine with spicy layers of richly textured red berry and savoury fruit.
Naturally, I needed to makes sure @FreshMikeEats dish was just as delectable as mine. He went for the Brixham Stone Bass with samphire, cucumber, & lemon butter with roast Chanteney carrots. The bass was cooked so the skin was crispy yet the fleshy chunks of fish were moist and flakey, tasting like it had just been plucked from the British Isles with a gentle hum of the lemon butter bringing it all together.
Oh Hurley House, you and I are going to be the best of friends.
Pssst between you and I, Hurley House have also recently launched live music Fridays. So you can enjoy ALL OF THAT, with the added bonus of enjoying the musical talents of an ever changing music line up. You lucky thing!
Is dinner really complete with out dessert?
Of course not! Our waiter persuaded us to try the Sugar Apple with cinnamon cream, sable biscuit & sorbet + the Blackberry Semifreddo, prosecco jelly, and white chocolate aero, and what fine choices there were.
They tasted as magnificent as they looked, not too sweet and perfectly balanced between the tang of the fruit and the sweetness of the cream.
I mean just look at that face of satisfaction.
After being thoroughly wine & dined, it was time to walk the strenuous 5m from the dining room to the boudoir…With the softest yet firm mattress, fluffiest pillows and a duvet with the softest cotton and most importantly that feeling of having a good weight to it. I fell into the deepest sleep I’ve had in a long time. Normally I find it difficult sleeping in hotel rooms, so that is saying something.
The next morning, proved very difficult to pry me from the soft comforts of the room. The sheer attention to detail of each room, really impressed me and I was skulking around the room before Mike tackled me out for breakfast.
And I’m so glad he did!
Look at this…The breakfast spread included cooked breakfast of your choice and is available until 11am, we went for the Baked eggs with chorizo, Full English & a side of Avocado toast – also this kitchen churns their own butter. There is nothing better than an English breakfast, and whilst I was shovelling it down, I was trying to think of excuses to stay just a little longer here.
I found one, how can I possibly leave without fully exploring the grounds?!
