Boulangerie Bon Matin: Bread is Serious Business

Girl holding a carrot cake and a tart, looking down and leaning out of a window. Tarts from Boulangerie Bon Matin.

My love of bread is a deep and passionate affair. I cannot live without a daily dose of it. It’s an addiction, I never hope to give up.

Like many people trapped within their homes during the lockdown.

I discovered, that baking was not a skill that I possessed. Freestyle cooking however - nailed it.

Baking requires precision, discipline and restraint.

I’m wild in the kitchen at times, I don’t like to measure precise measurements; I do as I feel, as I please, as I go.

It was during lockdown that I found a new found appreciation for my local bakery.

"Boulangerie Bon Matin is the inspiration of Dahmane Ladjassa, a man who has worked with food since childhood. Having trained in Paris in pastry, he then went on to graduate with distinction at the top of his class in one of the best culinary schools in London.”

At the best of times, I leave baking to the professionals.

Boulangerie Bon Matin is where I creep over to when I just need a croissant filled with cheese and mushrooms, a carrot cake and a loaf of brown sourdough bread.

Bread, lightly toasted with a generous spoon of butter topped with flaky sea salt is all you need.

Nothing beats freshly toasted bread with good quality butter.

Carrot cake is one of my many weaknesses, and I just adore how adorable these cakes are. Wonderfully moist, with those fruity and nutty notes topped with a rich buttercream that’s not too sweet.

Balance is the spice of life.
